Our documentary film is successfully spreading the word about the efforts to save the Dinaric-SE Alpine lynx population from extinction. To make it reach even more people around Europe and even further, it has been screened at film festivals, national televisions and various events. More than 8000 people already watched it on LIFE Lynx YouTube channel, where it is available with Italian, English, Romanian, Croatian, Slovenian, and German subtitles. Hungarian WWF recognized the importance of our film for the Hungarian audience, so they translated the subtitles to their language. We are delighted to see that the film is successfully spreading beyond the borders of the project.

Short summary of the film:

The LIFE Lynx project has brought 18 lynx from healthy populations in the Carpathian Mountains to Slovenia and Croatia, with an aim to introduce new genes in a highly inbreed Dinaric-SE Alpine lynx population. The project has joined experts, conservationists, researchers, and hunters from five European countries, with a common goal – saving the lynx from extinction. In addition to lynx translocations, the international team is also monitoring the lynx, preventing illegal killing, and promoting acceptance of the large carnivore among the local people. Key stakeholders – the hunters from Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Romania and Slovakia – are actively involved in the project, which builds on the approach from the 70s, when hunters and foresters reintroduced the lynx to the Slovenian forests. Together we will help save the lynx, Europe’s largest wild cat.

Now in its 40th year, the Animal Behavior Society (ABS) film festival featured top films that were produced in the preceding five years that portray important concepts in animal behavior research and education. Categories include both amateur (non-commercial) and professional (commercial) films. Films were ranked based on their accuracy, quality of narration, quality of videography, degree of anthropomorphism, and overall appeal.

After careful deliberation, the Film Committee was happy to announce that the ABS 2024 Film of the Year in the Non-Commercial category was awarded to “Together for Lynx” “”, directed by Gregor Šubic and Timotej Vrtnik.

In Romania, lynx does not have just a day for celebration (International Lynx Day), but an entire festival. LYNX Festival aims at bridging the connection of people to nature through documentary films and photography, and its name was inspired by the emblematic feline and the hardships that the organizers faced to photograph this beautiful animal in the wilderness of the Carpathians.

This year, the second edition of the festival offered screenings, exhibitions, masterclasses and other activities dedicated to nature, spread over the entire week preceding the International Lynx Day (June 11). The Mighty Lynx cartoon and our documentary, Together for Lynx, were both screened on the last day of the festival, on June 9.

The cinema was full of children, who, despite the language barrier, enjoyed every minute of the cartoon and the documentary alongside the adults. After the documentary, Dan Dinu (event organizer, Wild Romania and Forona associations) and Teodora Sin (representing LIFE Lynx, ACDB) conducted a Q&A and storytelling session with the public. The children’s questions were the most fun to answer and the kids were happy to learn about how the lonely lynxes in the Dinaric Mountains and the Alps were saved by their new friends coming all the way from the Carpathians.

At the end of the LIFE Lynx project, we published a report summarizing the essence of the project – why and how we saved the lynx from extinction in the Dinaric Mountains and SE Alps.

The report is primarily written for the general public and anyone who would like to learn about the key ideas and actions that have been implemented during the project. It shows the joint efforts of eleven project partners from five countries – Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Romania, and Slovakia. Reading through the report, you will learn that the road to success was based on cooperation of many stakeholders and enthusiastic individuals who forged the path of lynx’ survival in the Alps and the Dinaric Mountains.

The lead partner, the Slovenia Forest Service, published this report in several languages; Slovenian, English, Italian, and Croatian. You are welcome to read the report online or get your hard copy by contacting the LIFE Lynx project partner from your country or by writing to life.lynx.eu@gmail.com.
